Providence & Presidents

Providence, Rhode Island and Political Ads

By: Dwight Douglas, VP Marketing
Media Monitors - New York

(White Plains, NY) November 12, 2012 – According to Arbitron, Providence-Warwick-Pawtucket, RI is the 43rd largest radio market with a population of 1,382,200.

CITY FACTS

  • Providence was founded by Roger Williams in June 1636, as a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence" which he believed was responsible for his finding such a haven to settle.

  • The city was once nicknamed the "Beehive of Industry", while today "The Renaissance City" is more common, though as of the 2000 census, its poverty rate was still among the ten highest for cities over 100,000.

  • From the 1950s to the 1980s, Providence was a notorious bastion of organized crime. The legendary mafia boss Raymond Patriarca ruled a vast criminal enterprise from the city for over three decades, during which time murders and kidnappings became commonplace.

  • The main art museum is the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, which has the twentieth largest collection in the country. The school is where David Byrne of the Talking Heads alternative rock band attended.

  • We have never had a president from Rhode Island, but Providence has produced actors: Ruth Buzzi, James Woods and Debra Messing; Directors/Writers Bobby and Peter Farrell; Baseball coach Davey Lopes; cartoon character Peter Griffin and his creator, Seth MacFarlane; Musicians, John Cafferty and Bill Conti; and writer H. P. Lovecraft.

SPOT TRENDS
Last Twelve Months

One would think that a company called Stanley Steemer would have been started by a guy named Stanley. But this company was started in 1947 in Dublin, Ohio by a man named Jack Bates. His one-man carpet cleaning business grew into a major force in carpet cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, upholstery cleaning, hardwood floor cleaning and air duct cleaning. The company also does water damage restoration and sells a line of cleaning products for home and office use.

With more than 300 corporate-owned and franchised locations in the United States, Stanley Steemer was one of the first companies to employ a steam-cleaning machine. The prototype was made in 1970 and called the Stanley 1.

The refined version of their innovative dual-wand cleaning machine hit the streets in 1976 and was truck-mounted. Through the 1980s Stanley Steemer experienced unprecedented growth.

In 1985, Wesley Bates, son of founder Jack Bates, assumes the role of President and CEO. In 1998, Stanley Steemer introduced their Air Duct Cleaning service and then in 1999, they added flooring sales & installation.

In 2000, Stanley Steemer was the first carpet cleaning company to launch its first national network television advertising campaign. In 2001, they added tile & grout cleaning to their menu of services.

Along with their unique logo, a picture of one of their trucks, they also employ a national toll-free number - 1-800-STEEMER - that routes customers at any point in the US to their local Stanley Steemer operation.

In 2002 they introduced online scheduling through their website, stanleysteemer.com. In 2007, Justin Bates, son of Wesley Bates, was named president, and became the third generation to take over leadership of the family-owned business. His father, Wes Bates, remained as CEO. Not one Stanley was involved.

Now you get the answer to the name. Why is "Steemer" spelled with two "E's"? When the original steam cleaning equipment was operating, it reminded Jack Bates of the old Stanley Steamer steam powered automobile. From 1902 to 1924, the Stanley Brothers out of Newton, Massachusetts produced a car called the Stanley Steamer. Probably in order to stay out of trademark conflict and to be unique, Bates decided to spell it with two “E’s”. The rest is just hot air.

Because Stanley Steemer is a private company, there are no financial statistics available. Between their headquarters and more than 54 company-owned branches, they employ 2,300 people. This number does not include employees at over 250 independently-owned franchises nationwide.

Stanley Steemer ran 66,494 spots on Local Cable in the last 12 months. The biggest month on Cable was last April 2012 when they ran 8,373 spots.

On the Radio, Stanley Steemer was a minor advertiser with only 1,957 spots aired in the last 12 months. Their biggest month was last month, October 2012, with 358 ads. In many months they never got over the 100 spot mark.

64.78% of Stanley Steemer ads ran on Broadcast TV to the tune of 125,882 spots in the last 12 months. Their biggest month was June 2012 when they ran 17,186 spots.

Walgreens vs. CVS

The Walgreen Company (NYSE: WAG), d/b/a Walgreens (without an apostrophe) is the second largest drugstore chain in the United States. The company operates 6,997 drugstores across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Walgreens chain began in 1901 owned by Galesburg native Charles R. Walgreen, Sr.

By 1913, there were five Walgreen drugstores. He added several improvements to the stores such as soda fountains and luncheon service. He also began to make his own line of drug products and was then able to control the quality of the items and sell them at lower prices.

By 1930, there were 397 stores in 87 cities with annual sales of 4 million dollars. This expansion can be in part attributed to the collection of bootlegged alcohol which Walgreens would often stock under the counter. The company did not really suffer from the Stock Market Crash and Great Depression.

By 1934, Walgreens was operating in 30 states with over 601 stores. After Charles Walgreen Sr. died, his son Charles R. Walgreen Jr. took over and ran the chain until his retirement.

The company acquired 258 Duane Reade stores across the New York City metropolitan area in 2010. Other acquisitions included 12 Eaton Apothecary pharmacies in the Boston area; 25 Snyder’s Drug Stores in Minnesota; and 17 Ike’s and Super-D drugstores in the Memphis area.

Walgreens has a total of 7,761 drugstores, 355 wellness centers and 83 infusion and respiratory facilities.

According to Walgreens annual report, they reported sales of $72.1 billion and a net income of $2.714 billion in fiscal 2011. As of August 2011, 247,000 people worked for Walgreens – 71,000 of them are part-time.

CVS (NYSE: CVS) opened its first store in 1963 selling health and beauty products in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was founded by brothers, Stanley and Sidney Goldstein and partner Ralph Hoagland. CVS stands for Consumer Value Stores. CVS nearly doubled in size with its acquisition of 84 Clinton Drug and Discount Stores in 1972. Two years later, CVS achieved $100 million in annual sales.

In 1978 CVS found success by differentiating itself from the competition by opening small health and beauty aids stores in enclosed shopping malls. CVS became the 15th largest pharmacy chain in the U.S. in 1980 with 408 stores and $414 million in sales. CVS Corporation joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1996 under the CVS ticker. Stanley Goldstein was the company's first chairman.

CVS completed its acquisition of more than 2,500 stores from Revco in 1997, which was the largest acquisition in the history of the U.S. retail pharmacy industry. The acquisition of Revco gave CVS key drugstore locations in the Midwest and Southeast. CVS ProCare was established as a specialty pharmacy subsidiary of CVS.

As of December 31, 2009, the Retail Pharmacy segment included 7,025 retail drugstores making it the largest drug store retailer in the country with Walgreens about 30 stores behind them.

According to their latest annual report, CVS had revenues of $107.10 billion with a net income of $3.49 billion last year, which represented an 11.1% increase in sales for 2011. They have 202,000 employees.
