(White Plains, NY) November 28, 2011 - According to Arbitron, Las Vegas, NV is the 32rd largest radio market with a population of 1,650,500. They were 33rd a year ago.

CITY FACTS

  • Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in the 20th century.

  • The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title: Sin City, but its current PR slogan is “What happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas.” The success of this campaign is evident in how often people say it and comedians use it as a basis for jokes.

  • Colleges and Universities: The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, called UNLV by sportscasters and students alike, The University of Nevada Medical School, the University of Phoenix, and Nevada State College.

  • The primary drivers of the Las Vegas economy: tourism, gaming, and conventions, which in turn feed the retail and dining industries. The city serves as world headquarters for the world's two largest gaming companies, Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Resort Group.

  • Some famous people from Las Vegas include: Kyle Busch, NASCAR Driver; Andre Agassi, tennis player; Carey Hart, pro BMX rider; Spencer Smith, musician (Panic at the Disco) and baseball pitchers Mike and Greg Maddox.


LAS VEGAS SPOT TEN

STATE FARM was the #1 advertiser in Las Vegas last week with 915 spots. DOLLAR LOAN CENTER was #2 running 881 ads, while LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY was #3 airing 797 commercials. WAL-MART landed at #4 with 737 spots and CENTENNIAL TOYOTA SCION took #5 706 spots. ONE NEVADA CREDIT UNION was #6 with 693 ads, while US DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES hit #7 airing 650 spots and YES! AIR CONDITIONING & PLUMBING landed at #8 with 612 spots. MICHAEL E. MINDEN DIAMOND JEWELERS sparkled at #9 with 567 spots and MCDONALD’S jumped from #26 to #10 with 553 spots.

DEPARTMENT STORES SPOT TEN

NATIONAL STATISTICS -

SEARS was the #1 advertiser in this category with 20,932 spots. KOHL’S took #2 with 19,159 spots, while MACY’S was steady at #3 airing 10,156 ads. JCPENNEY stayed at #4 with 9,521 spots and T.J.MAXX – MARSHALLS – HOMEGOODS leaped from #29 to #5 with 3,809 commercials. BLOOMINGDALE’S zoomed from #29 to #5 with 1,373 spots and BEALLS, INC was #7 with 995 spots. BURLINGTON COAT FACTORY was a solid #8 running 880 spots, while H-E-B PLUS! came from #14 to #9 with 829 spots. BEALLS OUTLET was #10 with 428 spots.

NATIONAL SPOT TEN

NATIONAL STATISTICS -

THE HOME DEPOT took back #1, up from #3, with 50,924 spots. WAL-MART was #2 clearing 35,552 ads, while STATE FARM was #3 with 31,577 commercials. GEICO was #4 with 31,380 spots. MCDONALD’S ran 27,733 spots and landed in #5.

SPOT TRENDS
Last Twelve Months

Menards® started in 1958, when there was a need for economical agricultural buildings. The farm industry became more mechanized, which created a demand for low-cost housing of stock and machinery.

As a means to finance his education, John Menard, Jr. decided to make buildings for farmers. By the summer of 1959, several buildings had been erected in the Eau Claire, Wisconsin area and the Menard name was gaining a reputation.

Due to the increasing demand for Menard pole buildings, it became necessary to purchase more equipment and put on additional crews. Advertising literature was circulated throughout the state. The demand grew to such proportions that when John graduated from college and could devote all of his time to the business, Menards® was formed.

Prospective pole building customers often inquired about purchasing lumber and building materials. Realizing the consumer need for building materials, Menards® began to sell materials to the public on a cash-and-carry basis. This was the very beginning of Menard Cashway Lumber.

In 1969, the manufacturing and warehousing functions were added to the company, beginning with the truss plant. Since then, more plants have been added for treated lumber, pre-hung doors, board, steel, nail packaging, concrete, and extrusion.

The sale of the Menard Building Division in 1994 ended nearly three and a half decades of pole barn construction and paved the way for even greater expansion in retail home improvement centers.

Today, Menards® is recognized as the retail home center leader of the Midwest with 262 stores in 13 states. Estimates claim the company earns revenues near $8 billion and they have 45,000 employees.

On Local Cable Menards ran a total of 41,622 spots in the last 12 months. The biggest month on Cable was last November (2010) with 4,370 spots.

Menards likes Radio with 57.33% of all spots running on that media in the last 12 months. They ran 190,175 spots and the biggest month was last August at 17,193 spots. Note how consistently they have advertised on Radio.

TV, Menards ran a total of 99,917 ads in the last 12 months. The biggest month was January of this year with 9,263 spots.

HERSHEY vs. MARS

The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) is headquartered in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a town permeated by the aroma of cocoa and home to Hershey's Chocolate World. Hershey’s, as it commonly called, is the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America.

It was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company, a subsidiary of his Lancaster Caramel Company. In 1900, he sold his caramel company for $1,000,000 so that he could concentrate on manufacturing chocolate. In 1907, he introduced a small, conical-shaped flat-bottomed piece of chocolate called the “Hershey’s Kiss”; today, 80 million of those candies are produced each day. He went on to introduce Hershey’s Syrup in 1926 and Hershey’s semi-sweet chocolate chips in 1928.

Hershey's chocolate products are sold worldwide and include: Almond Joy, Cadbury, Hershey's Bliss, Hershey's Pot Of Gold, Hershey's Kisses, Milk Duds, Mr. Goodbar, Reese's peanut butter cups, Reese's Pieces, Skor toffee bar, Take 5 candy bar and York Peppermint Patties.

Hershey’s also produces candies such as: Good & Plenty, Jolly Rancher, Payday, Ice Breakers, and chocolate pantry products for cooking with chocolate.

Last year Hershey had revenues of $5.67 billion with net income of $509.80 million, which represented a 7.0% growth in sales. They have 13,500 employees.

Mars, Incorporated is a world-wide manufacturer of confectionery, pet food and other food products.

Frank C. Mars, whose mother taught him to hand-dip candy at age 19 decided to turn that into a business. In Tacoma, Washington, Frank started The Mars Candy Factory with his second wife Ethel V. Mars, but that effort failed. Then in 1920, Frank Mars returned to his home state, Minnesota, where he launched a new company called Mar-O-Bar Company.

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia today, they are entirely owned by the Mars family, making it one of the largest privately owned U.S. corporations. John Mars is the Chairman. Most of its production activities in the US take place in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

Because it is still a family owned company, they are famous for their secrecy. A 1993 Washington Post Magazine article was a rare raising of the veil, as the reporter was able to see the "M"s being applied to the M&M's, something that "no outsider had ever before been invited to observe.”

Their product line includes: 3 Musketeers, Dove Chocolate, Kudos, M&M's, Mars Bar, Mars Delight, Milky Way, Nutro, Skittles, Snickers, Tracker, and Twix, to name a few.

On April 28, 2008, Mars purchased the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, the chewing gum concern, for about $23 billion.

According to their corporate web site, Mars has net sales of more than $30 billion from six business segments including: Petcare, Chocolate, Wrigley, Food, Drinks and Symbioscience.

They have more than 65,000 employees worldwide.

On Cable, Mars aired 70.19% as many spots as Hershey’s in the last 12 months. Mars ran 715,171 spots against Hershey’s 1,018,961 commercials. Hershey’s biggest month on Local Cable was last month with 113,168 spots. That’s a lot of kisses. Mars ran hottest last March with 68,331 spots.

On the Radio, both Hershey’s and Mars take a conservative path. Hershey’s ran 104,461 spots in the last 12 months, while Mars only ran 30,258 spots in the last 12 months. Mars ran hot in March with 4,453 ads, while Hershey’s ran the most radio ads in May with 11,721 spots.

On TV, Mars aired 25.86% as many spots as Hershey’s. Hershey’s cleared 1,007,862 spots against Mars 260,662 spots. The biggest month for Hershey’s was last December with 112,888 ads, while Mars ran the most in August with 32,899 spots.
