Skin Care & "The Capital District"

Albany and Cosmetics

By: Dwight Douglas, VP Marketing
Media Monitors - New York

(White Plains, NY) October 10, 2011 – According to Arbitron, the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY area is the 65th largest radio market with a population of 802,300.

CITY FACTS

  • Albany is the capitol of the state of New York and was settled by Englishman Henry Hudson, while exploring for the Dutch East India Company on the Halve Maen (or Half Moon). He reached the area in 1609. In 1614, the Dutch company constructed Fort Nassau.

  • Albany's location on the Hudson River made it a center of transportation from the outset. In 1807, Robert Fulton initiated a steamboat line from New York City to Albany. On October 26, 1825 the Erie Canal was completed, forming a continuous water route from the Great Lakes to New York City.

  • The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, a complex of several state government buildings in downtown was built between 1959 and 1976 at a total cost of $1.7 billion. One of the buildings looks like a flying-saucer landed.

  • The economy is heavily dependent on the state government. But there are other businesses, like Golub Corporation, the family-owned operator of Price Chopper supermarkets; Albany International, the large paper company; LexisNexis Group, legal and business information; Trans World Entertainment, media retailer and the not-for-profit consortium SEMATECH, which performs research and development to advance chip manufacturing.

  • Perhaps a connection to the city’s Dutch past, The Tulip Festival, or the Tulip Fest as locals call it, takes place each year in Albany’s Washington Park. This traditional Albany event marks the beginning of spring in early May.

  • Albany is another important minor league town for sports: Minor league professional teams include Albany River Rats (AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes), Albany Conquest (af2 arena football), Albany Patroons (CBA and USBL basketball), Chance of a Lifetime Basketball Academy (National Pro-Am basketball franchise) and the Tri-City Valley Cats (New York-Penn League "short A" baseball, affiliate of the Houston Astros, based in nearby Troy).

  • Famous people from Albany: singer Nikki Cleary, recently retired 60-Minutes commentator Andy Rooney, actor William Devane, writer Gregory Maguire (WICKED) and the 21st President of the United States, the less than famous Chester Arthur.

SPOT TRENDS
Last Twelve Months

Nestlé S.A. is the largest food and nutrition company in the world. Founded and headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, Nestlé was created by a 1905 merger of the Anglo-Swiss Milk Company and the Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé’s company. Henri Nestlé retired in 1875, but the company retained his name.

Both companies with their use of condensed and dried-milk were leaders in the baby food business. By the early 1900s, the company was operating factories in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain.

The First World War created new demand for dairy products in the form of government contracts, and by the end of the war, Nestlé's production had more than doubled.

After the war, government contracts dried up, and consumers switched back to fresh milk. Nestlé's management responded quickly, streamlining operations and reducing debt. The 1920s saw Nestlé's first expansion into new products, with chocolate-manufacture becoming the company's second most important activity.

Nestlé felt the effects of the Second World War immediately with decreased profits. Ironically, the war helped with the introduction of the company's newest product, Nescafé ("Nestlé's Coffee"), which became a staple drink of the US military. Nestlé's production and sales then rose in the wartime economy.

The end of World War II was the beginning of a dynamic phase for Nestlé. Growth accelerated and companies were acquired. In 1947, they bought Fabrique de Produits Maggi SA and its holding company, Alimentana SA of Kempttal, Switzerland. Maggi was a major manufacturer of soup mixes and related foodstuffs. Nestlé Alimentana SA became the new corporate name.

Crosse & Blackwell followed in 1950, as did Findus in 1963, Libby's in 1971 and Stouffer's in 1973.

In 1984, Nestlé's bought out American food giant Carnation and the British confectionery company Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988, which brought the Willy Wonka brand to Nestlé.

They tapped San Pellegrino in 1997, took Spillers Petfoods in 1998, and Ralston Purina in 2002. That same year, Nestlé merged its U.S. ice cream business into Dreyer's, and in August they paid $2.6 billion to acquire Chef America, the creator of Hot Pockets. Another recent purchase included the Jenny Craig weight-loss program, for $600 million.

And the deal that got away, Nestlé almost purchased one of its fiercest confectionery competitors, the iconic American company Hershey's.

In December 2005, Nestlé bought the Greek company Delta Ice Cream, and along with Dreyers made them the world's largest ice cream maker.

In November 2006, Nestlé purchased the Medical Nutrition division of Novartis Pharmaceutical for $2.5 billion and in 2007, the milk-flavoring product known as Ovaltine.

In 2007, returning to its roots, Nestlé bought US baby-food manufacturer Gerber for $5.5 billion.

In 2010, Nestlé concluded the purchase of Kraft's North American frozen pizza business for $3.7 billion. And in 2011, Nestlé SA agreed to buy 60 percent of Hsu Fu Chi International Ltd. for about $1.7 billion.

According to their annual report Nestlé, in 2010, created revenues of $121.9 billion with net income of $46.41 billion. Their sales grew by 6.2% in 2010. They employ over 281,000 people.

On Local Cable, Nestlé ran 1,047,483 ads in the last 12 months (yes, that’s over one million). Their biggest month was May with 131,266 spots.

On Radio, they ran 259,953 spots in the last 12 months with the hottest month being May with 45,010 spots.

On TV, Nestlé ran a healthy 558,722 spots with May having 65,397, June having 63,593 and August clearing 64,249 spots.

Univision vs. Telemundo

Univision is the Spanish-language television network with the largest audience of Spanish language television viewers reaching 97% of all Hispanic TV viewers in America, according to A.C. Nielsen.

In 1955, Raul Cortez founded KCOR-TV, Channel 41, in San Antonio, Texas. The call letters were later changed to KUAL-TV. The station was not profitable, and in 1961 Cortez sold it to a group headed by his son-in-law Emilio Nicolas, Sr. and Mexican entertainment guru Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta.

The new owners turned the San Antonio station around, and then expanded the group in 1962 when they signed on KMEX-TV, channel 34 in Los Angeles. Then, in 1968 they added WXTV channel 41 in Paterson, New Jersey, serving the New York metropolitan area. This was the beginning of the Spanish International Network, the first non-English-language television network in the United States.

Over the next 20 years, SIN acquired other high-rated Spanish language television stations throughout the Western United States, and then expanded their markets to WLTV in Florida, KDTV in San Francisco, and WSNS-TV in Chicago.

In the mid-1970s the network also began to distribute their national signal via satellite, first as a 'super-station'-type feed of KWEX-TV San Antonio, then as a general feed allowing cable television operators to carry the network at little cost to their systems.

Univision was acquired on March 29, 2007 by a consortium led by Haim Saban's Saban Capital Group, along with TPG Capital, L.P., Providence Equity Partners, Madison Dearborn Partners, and Thomas H. Lee Partners for $13.7 billion.

Univision recently was one of the networks that carried The World Cup matches, which according to industry experts increased the Univision audience by 49% from the World Cup broadcasts in 2006.

It runs the top-rated Univision network, carried by more than 1,400 broadcast and cable affiliates, as well as sister networks TeleFutura and Galavisión. The company also owns and operates about 60 local broadcast TV stations. Univision has more than 4,000 employees.

Telemundo is a division of NBC Universal and one of the leaders in the production and distribution of Spanish-language content across its multi-platform portfolio to U.S. Hispanics and audiences around the world.

Telemundo's multiple platforms include Telemundo, a Spanish-language television network featuring original productions, theatrical motion pictures, news and first-class sports events reaching 93% of U.S. Hispanic viewers in 210 markets through its 15 owned-and-operated stations, 45 broadcast affiliates, and 800 cable affiliates.

They also own and operate mun2, the preeminent voice for bicultural Hispanics in the U.S. reaching over 30 million U.S. TV households nationwide on digital and analog cable, satellite and free television.

Their digital footprint is quite large with Telemundo Digital Media to deliver Telemundo's original content across digital and emerging platforms including mobile devices and www.telemundo.com and www.holamun2.com.

Telemundo Internacional, the company's International distribution arm is the second largest provider of Spanish-language content worldwide by syndicating content to more than 100 countries in over 35 languages.

Telemundo was founded by Ángel Ramos with a television station in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1954. Telemundo Communications Group, the network's parent company was purchased by NBC Universal in 2002 for $2.7 billion. NBC Universal is now part of Comcast. Jeff Gaspin, who is president and COO of Universal Television Group, oversees the network.

Telemundo has 1,800 employees, and is headquartered in Hialeah, a Miami, Florida suburb.

On Local Cable these two giants really don’t spend that much. Telemundo ran only 809 spots in 12 months, while Univision only cleared 341 spots. If you think about it, all their advertising is in Spanish and would not run on Anglo cable channels. Telemundo’s biggest month on cable was April with 560 spots, while Univision ran the most spots last October at 226 units.

On the Radio, Univision is the stronger advertiser with 288,424 spots in the last 12 months, while Telemundo ran 52,356 spots. The biggest month for Univision was the new season in October 2010 with 27,507 spots and Telemundo’s hottest month was last May with 9,383 spots.

On TV, Univision is the clear winner with 849,951 spots in the last 12 months, while Telemundo ran 565,544 ads. Univision’s hottest month was January 2010 with 80,241 spots and Telemundo’s biggest month was May of this year with 55,025 spots.
