The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG) is the world’s largest marketer of branded consumer lawn and garden products. In addition to its consumer lawn care business, Scotts holds over 10% of the commercial lawn care market which includes top 100 golf courses as well as MLB venues such as Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, and Wrigley Field.

The company was started by Civil War veteran, Orlando Mclean Scott, in 1866. He held a firm conviction that “famers need and shall have clean, weed-free fields” and began sorting weed seeds from crop seeds for local famers. He saw returns of 99.91% weed-free farms.

In 1907, Scott’s son, Dwight, launched Scotts’ mail-order grass seed business and by 1914, the O.M. Scott & Sons Company was incorporated.

In 1928, O.M. Scott & Sons launched Turf Builder, the first fertilizer formulated specifically for grass. In the time following World War II, lush, green lawns became a hallmark of suburbia which made fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides extremely popular.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Scotts introduced new broadleaf herbicide and Scutl, Clout, and Halts for crabgrass. In 1957, the company created a new version of their Turf Builder that weighed less, smelled better, and was gentler to grass than the original. Scotts also developed the first lawn spreader for home and commercial use.

Scotts went public in 1992 as The Scotts Company, selling 12.5 million shares at $19 each.

Three years later, in 1995, Scotts made its most important acquisition when it purchased Stern’s Miracle-Gro Products for an exchange of $195 million worth of equity.

The Miracle-Gro company evolved out of the partnership of nurseryman, Otto Stern, and advertising executive, Horace Hagedorn. What started out as a profitable mail order plant business in the 1940s became a multimillion dollar lawn care company by the 1990s. The Scotts Miracle-Gro company began trading on the New York Stock exchange as of December 31, 1995 and its name was officially changed as of 2005.

By the early 2000s, Scotts Miracle-Gro had annual sales of over $1 billion. In 2010, the company had total revenues of $3.14 billion and net income of over $204 million. They currently have 6,750 employees.

On Cable, The Scotts Company ran 63,701 spots in the last 12 months. And as you can imagine, this is a seasonal company. In May of last year they ran 18,455 ads, in June, 11,881 spots and last month, April, they ran 16,605 spots.

On the Radio, Scotts ran 216,513 spots in the last 12 months with the biggest month being last month with 81,513 spots.

On TV, the pattern continues with last May having 25,008 spots and then last month, April, running 19,614 ads. They ran a total of 88,435 spots on TV in the last 12 months.
