Media Monitors - New York

(White Plains, NY) May 9, 2011 – According to Arbitron, Milwaukee-Racine, WI is the 38th largest radio market with a population of 1,459,400. It is also the largest city in the state of Wisconsin.

CITY FACTS

  • The word "Milwaukee" comes from an Algonquian word Millioke which means "Good/Beautiful/Pleasant Land".

  • Well into the twentieth century, there were more German speakers and German-language newspapers than English speakers and English-language newspapers in the city. Milwaukee also has the third largest Polish population in the U.S. behind only New York City and Chicago.

  • Milwaukee was once the home to four of the world's largest breweries (Schlitz, Blatz, Pabst, and Miller) and was the number one beer producing city in the world for many years. Miller Brewing Company is the second largest beer maker in the U.S. and remains a key employer with over 2,200 of the city's workers. They are now part of SABMiller, plc based in London but originally the South African Brewing company.

  • Milwaukee is known as the “City of Festivals.” The city is host to the Wisconsin State Fair; the annual Summerfest music festival which attracts over 840,000 visitors each year; and Trainfest, the largest operating model railroad show in America. It is also home to a variety of ethnically-themed festivals which take place throughout the summer months beginning in May.

  • For 41 years, The Green Bay Packers played nearly half of their home games at Milwaukee’s County Stadium, but played their last home game there on December 18, 1994 against the Atlanta Falcons. The Packers are still the NFL team to follow in Milwaukee - and are currently the NFL Champs beating the Pittsburgh Steelers this year in Superbowl XLV.

  • When the Milwaukee Braves baseball team left for Atlanta, the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers. The Brewers play at the new MILLER PARK, while the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA play at the Bradley Center.

  • Famous people from Milwaukee: Don Ameche, actor (Kenosha); Ellen Corby, actress (Racine); Willem J. Dafoe, actor (Appleton); Woody Herman, band leader;William H. Rehnquist, jurist; Tom Snyder, newscaster; Spencer Tracy, actor; Orson Welles, actor and producer (Kenosha) and Bob Uecker, baseball player and announcer.

Volkswagen, abbreviated VW, means “people’s car” in German. The Volkswagen Group is the largest car manufacturer in Europe and the third largest in the world. Besides Volkswagen, the VW Group also owns the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda, and Scania brands.

On June 22, 1934, the famed engineer, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, was selected to design the first “People’s Car” that would include changes like better fuel efficiency, reliability, ease of use, and economically efficient repairs and parts. Prototypes of the car called the "KdF-Wagen” appeared from 1936 onwards, bearing the design of the VW Beetle we all know today.

On May 28th, 1937 the "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" company was founded and on September 16th, 1938 it was renamed "Volkswagenwerk GmbH”.

After the end of the Second World War, in mid June 1945, Volkswagenwerk was placed in control of the British Military Government. Under the management of Major Ivan Hirst mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle began.

Volkswagens were first exhibited and sold in the United States in 1949, but only sold two units in America that first year. On its entry to the U.S. market, the VW was briefly sold as a "Victory Wagon". Volkswagen of America was formed in April 1955 to standardize sales and service in the United States.

Production of the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle increased dramatically over the years reaching one million in sales by 1955. On March 8th, 1950, the Type 2 Volkswagen Bus went into production and soon created rising demand thanks to its multifunctional capabilities.

On February 17, 1972, Volkswagen broke the world car production record with 15,007,034 units assembled, while the Beetle surpassed the legendary mark achieved by the Ford Motor Company's Model T.

In 1973, the Passat was the first model of the new generation of Volkswagen vehicles to go into production with front-wheel drive and a water-cooled four-cylinder engine. In January 1974 the first Golf was built and quickly became a hit and was an heir to the legendary Beetle.

Today, Volkswagen sells a number of cars under its namesake brand, including sedans, MPVs, trucks, SUVs, and coupes. Their product range extends from the supermini Polo, to compact Golf, to mid-size Jetta and Passat, and full-size Phaeton. The SUVs include the Tiguan and Touareg.

In 2010, Volkswagen was able to produce total revenues of more than $184 billion and almost $10 billion in net income. They have approximately 370,000 employees world-wide.

On Cable, VW ran 357,150 spots in the last 12 months. Their biggest month was November with 44,246 and tailing right behind that month was January with 42,409 spots.

On the Radio, Volkswagen ran hot in August with 13,418 spots, November with 11,297 and December with 13,022, but they started very slowly this year. Total radio spots ran in the last 12 months was 83,827.

On TV, VW ran 203,436 spots in the last 12 months with a big flight in December totaling 28,825 spots. On TV they opened the year rather strongly with February at 19,876 spots, March was 20,159 and April hit 20,367 ads.

RadioShack vs. Best Buy

RadioShack (NYSE: RSH), now referred to as The Shack, is an electronics retail store with locations throughout the United States, parts of Europe, South America, and Africa.

In 1921, the company was started in Boston by two brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, who wanted to provide equipment for the cutting-edge field of amateur radio.

Theodore and Milton Deutschmann opened a one-store retail and mail-order operation in the heart of downtown. They chose the name "Radio Shack," which was a term for the small, wooden structure that housed a ship's radio equipment.

After expanding to nine stores plus an extensive mail-order business, the company fell on hard times in the 1960s. Radio Shack was near bankruptcy, when Charles Tandy rode in on his white horse to save the company. He saw the potential of Radio Shack and retail consumer electronics, so he ponied-up $300,000 and bought the company. Tandy, whose company was a leather goods corporation, renamed the venture: Tandy Radio Shack & Leather. The company eventually divested itself of its non-electronic product lines.

The decade of the 1970s was pivotal for RadioShack. It was a time of incredible growth – not only in the number of stores that were opened, but in the quantity, quality and sophistication of the products it offered. In 1977, RadioShack introduced the first mass-produced personal computer: the TRS-80 microcomputer. Over 200,000 TRS-80 model computers were sold from 1977 to 1981.

In the 1980’s, RadioShack introduced the first affordably priced stereo receiver with digital technology, the first mobile/portable cellular telephone that consumers could install themselves and the first high-performance satellite TV system that could be installed by the “do-it-yourself-er”.

In 1994, the company introduced a service known as "The Repair Shop at Radio Shack," through which it provided inexpensive out-of-warranty repairs for more than 45 different brands of electronic equipment. A year later, it was elected that the name "Radio Shack" would be spelled in the CamelCase font as "RadioShack", and a new logo was launched.

In the summer of 2009, they made the move to The Shack as the new marketing name, even though they maintained the corporate name RadioShack and the store signs still say RadioShack.

The Shack has a network of nearly 7,200 stores located in the U.S. and around the world. In 2010, they had revenue of $4.47 billion and net income of $206 million. They have 35,100 employees.

Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is a multinational retailer of technology and entertainment products and services with a commitment to growth and innovation.

Best Buy accounts for 21% of the market electronics market.

In 1966, Richard M. Schulze and business partner James Wheeler opened Sound of Music, an audio specialty store, in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

In 1983, Sound of Music’s board of directors approved a new corporate name: Best Buy Co., Inc. and the first superstore opened in Burnsville, Minnesota. The store featured expanded selling space, a wide assortment of discounted brand-name goods, central service, and warehouse distribution.

In 1990, Best Buy eliminated commission for standalone sales people, but retained bonuses for management and supervisors. Two years later Best Buy hit the $1 billion mark in annual revenues and in 1997 Best Buy became the first national retailer to sell DVD hardware and software.

Geek Squad, CinemaNow, Magnolia Audio Video, and Pacific Sales are currently subsidiaries of Best Buy. They also own over 100 Best Buy Express Automated Retail stores or "ZoomShops", operated by Zoom Systems, in airports and malls around the U.S.

The Best Buy family of brands and partnerships collectively generate more than $45 billion in annual revenue. In 2010, the company had $49.69 billion in revenue and $1.31 billion net income. They have approximately 155,000 employees.
