S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. is one of the largest family owned and operated companies in the United States and is a leading manufacturer of household, personal care, and insect- control products. The company started in 1886 when Samuel Curtis Johnson, Sr. purchased the Racine Hardware Company parquet floor business and renamed it Johnson’s Prepared Paste Wax Company.

After successfully developing and selling Johnson’s Prepared Wax as a compliment to the flooring, by 1893, the company began experimenting with other products such as wood dye, crack filler, and car wax. By 1898, Johnson’s floor wax and other wood care products began to outsell his flooring and the floors were eventually discontinued in 1917.

In 1906, the company changed its name formally to S.C. Johnson & Son and continued to add to its product line with Floor Renewer, Under-Lac, and Flat Color Finish.

In 1914, S.C. Johnson & Son expanded internationally and established the British Johnson company. The company focused on its wax products as well as preservation products for cars. It was also during this decade that S.C. Johnson became one of the first U.S. companies to give out paid vacations, have profit sharing, and offer insurance for employees.

In 1920, the Canadian Johnson company was formed and the company’s product line expanded even further to include enamel paints, carbon remover, weighted brushes for painters, and Kleen Floor Restorer.

The French Johnson Company opened in 1931, the same year that Glo-Coat Floor Finish began being sold. Glo-Coat went on to be one of Johnson Wax’s longest selling products and one of the most successful floor care products of all time. At the end of the decade, S.C. Johnson unveiled the company’s newest office building that was designed by the notable architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

During the 1940’s many of the company’s employees were abroad fighting in World War II. S.C. Johnson held the jobs of those who were serving and put most of the company’s concentration into producing products for the war effort.

In 1956, Johnson introduced Raid House & Garden Bug Killer that was water based and the first product on the market that could be used on plants without killing them. Glade Air Fresheners were also introduced that year followed by Off! Insect repellant in 1957 and Pledge dust remover in 1958.

Johnson, was formed the same year and acquired 15 companies ranging from Eureka Tent & Awning Company to Under Sea Industries. Johnson entered the commercial pest control market when it purchased Bugs Burger Bug Killers. A year later, sales for the company surpassed $2 billion.

In 1990, S.C. Johnson had great success with the introduction of Brillo dish detergent, Pronto furniture polish, and Duck toilet cleaner. It was also the year that Glade Plug-Ins, long lasting fragrance dispensers that plug into an electrical outlet, burst onto the market to gain top position in the continuous action air freshener category.

In January 1992, S.C. Johnson & Son acquired Drackett Co. from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. for $1.15 billion and along with that acquired three outstanding brands: Windex glass cleaner, Drano drain opener, and Vanish toilet bowl cleaner.

In January 1998, the company purchased DowBrands from Dow Chemical Co. for $1.13 billion. The products acquired included Ziploc plastic bags, Saran Wrap plastic wrap, and Fantastik cleaners. With this acquisition, there was an immediate 20% increase in company revenue, growing to $5 billion in 1999.

The 2000s marked a company focus on “going green” by evaluating raw materials and their environmental impact. In 2003, S.C. Johnson acquired Bayer AG adding Baygon Insecticides and Autan repellants to its brands. In 2005, the company acquired Karamchand Appliance Private Limited and its ALL OUT brand of mosquito repellant.

S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. remains privately owned by the Johnson Family and is currently in its fifth generation of family ownership. Today, they have 12,000 employees around the globe as well as more than $8 billion in sales.

MICROSOFT vs. APPLE

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is a public multinational corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports computer related products and services. They are best known for the Microsoft Windows operating system as well Microsoft Office software. They are the makers of the video gaming system Xbox 360, (soon to be discontinued) digital media player Zune, and the new Windows Phone OS. The company was established by childhood friends, Paul Allen and Bill Gates, on April 4, 1975 to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry System’s (MITS) Altair 8800 microcomputer. The company went public in 1986 with an opening stock price of $21 per share. Stock prices peaked in 1999, at $119 per share, and resulted in an estimated four billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.

Microsoft solidified its dominance in the home computer operating system market in 1980 with MS-DOS. Microsoft Windows was released on November 20, 1984, receiving modifications throughout the years dating to the present Windows 7 system. In 1990, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Office, a software suite that included Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Both Windows and Office became dominant in their respective areas.

Throughout its history the company has been the target of criticism, including monopolistic business practices and anti-competitive strategies. The U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, among others, ruled against Microsoft for antitrust violations. But the company continues to be the most influential innovators in the world of computers and software.

Like Apple, Microsoft decided to open a chain of retail stores and on October 22, 2009 the first one opened in Scottsdale, Arizona. Currently there are 7 retail stores in the United States with an 8th opening later this month in Costa Mesa, California. Because Microsoft’s product line became much more diversified, they created five product divisions for the 2010 fiscal year: Windows and Windows Live Division, Server and Tools, Online Services Division, Microsoft Business Division, and Entertainment and Devices Division.

According to 2010 public records, Microsoft generated $62.484 billion in sales with $18.76 billion in profits. They have 89,000 employees.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) designs and markets personal computers, software, and electronics. The company is the manufacturer of the popular Macintosh brand of computers as well as personal electronics that include iPod mp3 player, iPad media tablet, and the iPhone smartphone. They are also known for their software such as iTunes, iLife, iWork, and Internet browser Safari. Apple was founded on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in Cupertino, California. The company was incorporated January 3, 1977 under the name Apple Computer, Inc. After going public in 1980, it generated more capital than any IPO since Ford Motor Company in 1956 and instantly created 300 millionaires.

Apple’s history is one of triumphs as well as some setbacks. The first product introduced was the Apple I computer kit, followed by the Apple II that included new features like color graphics and the floppy disk drive. The Apple III model did not fare well against competitors like IBM and Microsoft and was soon replaced on the market by the Apple Lisa. By the next year, the Apple Macintosh model was introduced in a commercial break during Superbowl XVIII. This marked the beginning of what is known as the “first golden age” of Macintosh from 1989 -1991.

By the late 1990s and into the 21st century, Apple’s success reached its height with some of today’s current best selling computers, software, and electronics. On May 19, 2001, the first Apple retail stores opened in Virginia and California and in the same year, Apple’s iPod digital audio player hit the market. On January 9, 2007, Apple Computer, Inc. officially changed its name to Apple, Inc. and the following day, iPhone and Apple TV were introduced to the public. 2010 was a year that Apple unveiled the iPad that sold more than 300,000 units on its first day as well as released updates to its iPod models, iPhone, MacBook Air and Mac OS X operating system.

Since Macintosh’s introduction during the 1984 Superbowl ad, directed by Ridley Scott, Apple has been known for its advertising and marketing efforts for all of their products. Apple is responsible for popularizing the song “1234” by Feist after appearing in its iPod nano commercials as well as for launching the single “New Soul”, by Yael Naim, to the top of the singles charts after appearing in its MacBook Air commercials. Apple also took a shot at the PC platform in their “Get a Mac” ad campaigns with the opening lines, “I’m a Mac. And I’m a PC.”

Today, Apple is one of the largest companies in the world and has surpassed Microsoft as the most valuable technology company in the world in May of 2010. They currently have 301 retail stores in ten countries. As of September 2010, have 46,600 employees with worldwide annual sales of $65.23 billion, with over $14 billion in profits.
