Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT) is the largest confectionery, food, and beverage corporation headquartered in the United States. It markets many brands in more than 155 countries. 11 of its brands annually earn more than $1 Billion worldwide: Kraft, Cadbury, Oscar Mayer, Maxwell House, Nabisco, Oreo, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Jacobs, Milka, LU, and Trident. 40 of its brands are at least 100 years old.

Canadian-born and of German origin, James L. Kraft started a wholesale door-to-door cheese business in Chicago in 1903; its first year of operations was "dismal", losing $3,000 and a horse. However, the business took hold and Kraft was joined by his four brothers to form J.L. Kraft and Bros. Company in 1909. As early as 1911, circulars and advertisements were in use by the company.

In 1912, the company established its New York City, New York, headquarters to prepare for its international expansion. By 1914, thirty-one varieties of cheeses were being sold around the U.S. because of heavy product development, expansion by marketing, and opening a wholly owned cheese factory in Illinois.

In 1915, the company had invented pasteurized processed cheese that did not need refrigeration, thus giving a longer shelf life than conventional cheese. The process was patented in 1916 and about six million pounds of the product were sold to the U.S. Army for military rations during World War I.

In 1924, the company changed its name to Kraft Cheese Company and was listed on the Chicago Stock Exchange, then added to the New York Stock Exchange in 1926. The firm then began to consolidate the United States dairy industry through acquisition.

At the end of 1988, Philip Morris Companies purchased Kraft for $12.9 billion. In 1989, Kraft merged with Philip Morris's General Foods unit - makers of Oscar Mayer meats, Maxwell House coffee, Jell-O gelatin, Budget Gourmet frozen dinners, Entenmann's baked goods, Kool-Aid, Crystal Light and Tang powdered beverage mixes, Post Cereals, Shake 'n Bake flavored coatings and numerous other packaged foods - as Kraft General Foods.

In 1995, it changed its name to the present name, Kraft Foods.

On September 7, 2009, Kraft made a £10.2 billion takeover offer for the long-established British confectionery group Cadbury, makers of Dairy Milk and Bournville chocolate. This move was seen as very controversial in the United Kingdom with Members of Parliament involved with “protectionism” on their minds. The deal was finally consummated with help from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Kraft most recent revenue report showed $40.39 billion with a net income of $3.02 billion. They have 97,000 employees.

Kraft Foods ran 60% of their spots on Cable. In the last 12 months, they ran 554,099 spots on Cable with biggest month in April with 76,628 ads.

On Radio, they start out in the year a bit slowly, but then peak in May with 18,410 spots. The total number of radio spots for the last 12 months was 71,204.

On TV, Kraft Foods also peaked in May with 37,450 but was more consistent than radio. The total for the last 12 months was 296,328 spots.

SUBWAY VS BURGER KING

SUBWAY is an amazing start-up story. In 1965, Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck teamed up and opened their first submarine sandwich shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Originally called "Pete's Super Submarines", they sold 312 sandwiches the first day. The average cost of a sub was between 49 and 69 cents.

In 1968, the fifth sandwich shop opened. 1968 also marked the first time the name SUBWAY was used. Later in 1974, the first franchised SUBWAY opened in Wallingford, Connecticut.

In 1975, the chain's flagship sandwich, the classic BMT, was first introduced. Going along with the subway transportation theme, it was named for the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit system; later it was referred to as "Biggest, Meatiest, Tastiest" in an ad campaign.

In 1983, The SUBWAY chain was ranked number one in the sub sandwich category by 'Entrepreneur' magazine, a spot that it has consistently held throughout the years. A year later, The SUBWAY restaurant chain opened its 1st International location in Bahrain in the Middle East.

In 1985, the chain celebrated the opening of their 500th store and their first restaurant in Puerto Rico. The SUBWAY chain placed 38th in 'Venture' magazine's first Franchise 100 list. Two years later, the company rose to take the #4 position.

SUBWAY restaurants reached all 50 states by 1989. The SUBWAY chain reached the goal of 5,000 restaurants with a restaurant opening in Texas in 1990. Five years later in 1995, the chain celebrated its 30th anniversary with the opening of the 11,000th location. The first SUBWAY locations opened in China, Costa Rica, Egypt, El Salvador, Honduras, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Spain and Taiwan.

In 1996 SUBWAY launched their website, www.subway.com. Later in 2000, Jared Fogle, the man who lost 245 pounds by including low fat SUBWAY sandwiches in a diet and exercise program of his own design, was introduced to the world in the first in a series of television commercials. Tae-Bo inventor, Billy Blanks was featured in a SUBWAY TV commercial to help promote the SUBWAY brand as a healthier alternative to fatty fast food.

In 2008, Entrepreneur magazine (January 2008) once again ranked the SUBWAY chain as #1 on its list of Americas Top Global Franchises.

There are more than 29,000 SUBWAY restaurants in 86 countries worldwide, including 6,000 conveniently placed in non-traditional locations, and 5,000 stores outside of the USA and Canada.

Burger King, the number two fast food chain in the world was first established in 1954 in Miami, Florida by James McLamore and David Edgerton. The WHOPPER® sandwich was introduced in 1957 and quickly became one of the best-known sandwiches in the world. According to BurgerKing.com, over 11 million guests visit BURGER KING® restaurants worldwide each day.

Burger King has gone through many image and menu changes since 1957. One of Donald N. Smith's, a former McDonald’s executive hired to revamp Burger King, first changes to the menu was the addition of the Burger King specialty sandwich line in 1979, which significantly expanded the breadth of the BK menu with many non-hamburger sandwiches including new chicken and fish offerings. A breakfast menu was also added along with the crossian’wich in 1983.

In 1999, BK revised its logo. The new Burger King logo is a stylized version of the original "bun halves" logo. Today’s Burger King slogan is “HAVE IT YOUR WAY,” but some of their past slogans have consisted of: "THE FIRE'S READY" (2003 – 2004), "AT BK, YOU GOT IT!"( 2002 - 2003), “The Whopper Says” (2001-2002), “Got The Urge?” (2000), “When You Have It Your Way It Just Tastes Better” (1999), “It Just Tastes Better” (1996) and “Get Your Burger’s Worth” (1994) and their attempt at repositioning McDonald’s “Eat like a king. Not a clown” that they used in the late 1970s.

Burger King (BKC) had revenues of $2.54 billion with net income of $200.10 million, which earned them a 2009 Sales Growth of 3.4%. They have 41,320 employees.
