(White Plains, NY) October 18, 2010 - According to Arbitron, Portland, OR is the 23rd largest radio market with a population of 2,106,200.

CITY FACTS

  • The land for the city was once owned by two men. One was from Boston, and one was from Portland, Maine. Each wanted to name the town after where they had come from, so they decided to do a coin toss. The gentleman from Portland won the toss, and that is how Portland got its name.

  • Portland’s climate is ideal for growing roses, and for more than a century, Portland has been known as "The City of Roses" with many rose gardens – most prominently the International Rose Test Garden.

  • Major performing arts institutions include the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon Symphony, Portland Center Stage, and the Portland Opera. Over 75 other art organizations produce theatre, music, dance, folk art, media arts in Portland.

  • Portland has one major league sports team, the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA, and a variety of minor league teams. Running is a major sport in the metropolitan area, which hosts the Portland Marathon and much of the Hood to Coast Relay (the world's largest such event). Philip H. Knight, the founder of NIKE, started the company in Portland.

  • Portland is well-known for its microbrewery beer. It is often said that Portland is the home of the microbrew revolution in the United States, sometimes being called Beervana.

  • Famous People from Portland: food expert James Beard, trumpeter Chris Botti, cartoonist Matt Groening, skater Tonya Harding, author Zoe Trope and pop band The Kingsmen known for their song, Louie, Louie.


PORTLAND SPOT TEN

In Portland last week GEICO was the #1 advertiser on the radio with 687 spots. PROGRESSIVE was #2 airing 661 ads, while SLEEP COUNTRY USA was #3 with 610 spots. MCDONALD’S was #4 with 576 commercials and FRED MEYER was #5 running 545 spots. In at #6 was WESTON KIA with 532 spots, while SHANE COMPANY was #7 airing 525 announcements. SAFELITE AUTOGLASS was #8 with 252 spots as well, and coming in #9 was CAR TOYS with 485 ads. RASMUSSEN BMW MINI was #10 with 477 spots.

AUTOMOTIVE PARTS & SERVICES SPOT TEN

NATIONAL STATISTICS -

In the category of Automotive Pars & Services SAFELITE AUTOGLASS comes in #1 with 30,630 spots for the week. AUTOZONE was #2 with 21,849 spots, while MIDAS connected at #3 with 9,952 ads. ADVANCE AUTO PARTS was #4 with 4,186 commercials and JUST BRAKES stopped at #5 with 2,853 spots. JIFFY LUBE slid into #6 with 1,701 spots and MONROE shocked the country from #11 up to #7 with 1,566 spots, while QUICK LANE moved from #13 to #8 with 1,563 spots. NAPA dropped from #4 to #9 running 1,395 spots and TIRE DISCOUNTERS was #10 running 1,050 spots.

NATIONAL SPOT TEN

NATIONAL STATISTICS -

On the National front, GEICO maintains the #1 position with 48,813 spots. SAFELITE AUTOGLASS jumps from #3 to #2 with 30,630 spots. THE HOME DEPOT was #3 with 26,449 ads, while MCDONALD’S was #4 with 25,344 commercials. WAL-MART was #5, up from #11, with 24,481 spots.

Last Twelve Months

Panera Bread began in 1981 as Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. founded by Louis Kane and Ron Shaich. The company prospered along the east coast of the United States and internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s and pioneered what is now called the “bakery-café” category.

In 1993, Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. purchased Saint Louis Bread Company®, a chain of 20 bakery-cafes located in the St. Louis area.

A comprehensive re-staging of Saint Louis Bread Co took place between 1993 and 1997 where average unit volumes increased by 75%. The final touch was to change the name of a portion of the chain to Panera Bread. Panera is a Spanish feminine noun meaning bread box.

By 1997, it was clear that the Panera Bread division had the potential to become one of the leading brands, but it would require all of the company's financial and management resources.

In May 1999, all of Au Bon Pain Co., Inc.'s business units were sold, with the exception of Panera Bread, and the company was renamed Panera Bread.

Since those transactions were completed, the company's stock has grown thirteen-fold and over $1 billion in shareholder value has been created.

Panera Bread has been recognized as one of Business Week's "100 Hot Growth Companies."

In 2007-2009, Panera Bread purchased Paradise Bakery & Café®, a Phoenix-based concept with over 70 locations in 10 states (predominantly in the west and southwest).

As of June 29, 2010, there were 1,399 bakery-cafes in 40 states and in Ontario, Canada operating under the Panera Bread®, Saint Louis Bread Co.® and Paradise Bakery & Café® names.

Panera Bread had revenues of $1.35 billion last year with a net income of $86.05 million, which was an increase of 4.2% in sales over a previous year. They have 12,100 employees.

The biggest months for Panera on Cable were September, October and June. They ran a total of 1,400 spots in the last 12 months.

Thanks to Panera for delivering the bread to radio with 268,512 spots in the last 12 months. The biggest month was June with 33,976 spots and the lowest month was last December with 6,312 ads.

On TV, Panera Bread only ran 5,909 spots in the last 12 months. Last month was their biggest schedule with 1,627 ads placed on TV.

CVS vs. Walgreens

CVS (NYSE: CVS) opened its first store in 1963 selling health and beauty products in Lowell Mass. It was founded by brothers, Stanley and Sidney Goldstein and partner Ralph Hoagland. CVS stands for Consumer Value Stores. CVS nearly doubled in size with its acquisition of 84 Clinton Drug and Discount Stores in 1972. The purchase introduced CVS to the Midwest with stores in Michigan and Indiana. Two years later in 1974, CVS achieves $100 million in annual sales.

In 1978 CVS found success by differentiating itself from the competition by opening small health and beauty aids stores in enclosed shopping malls. CVS became the 15th largest pharmacy chain in the U.S. in 1980 with 408 stores and $414 million in sales. CVS Corporation joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1996 under the CVS ticker. Stanley Goldstein was the company's first chairman.

CVS completed its acquisition of more than 2,500 stores from Revco in 1997, which was the largest acquisition in the history of the U.S. retail pharmacy industry. The acquisition of Revco gave CVS key drugstore locations in the Midwest and Southeast. CVS ProCare was established as a specialty pharmacy subsidiary of CVS.

As of December 31, 2009, the Retail Pharmacy segment included 7,025 retail drugstores making it the largest drug store retailer in the country with Walgreens about 30 stores behind them.

CVS had revenues of $98.73 billion with a net income of $3.70 billion last year, which was an increase 12.9% from 2008. They have 211,000 employees.

The Walgreen Company (NYSE: WAG), d/b/a Walgreens (without an apostrophe) is the second largest drugstore chain in the United States. The company operates 6,997 drugstores across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Walgreens chain began in 1901 owned by Galesburg native Charles R. Walgreen, Sr.

By 1913, there were five Walgreen drugstores. He added several improvements to the stores such as soda fountains and luncheon service. He also began to make his own line of drug products and was then able to control the quality of the items and sell them at lower prices.

By 1930, there were 397 stores in 87 cities with annual sales of 4 million dollars. This expansion can be in part attributed to the collection of bootlegged alcohol which Walgreen would often stock under the counter. The company did not really suffer from the Stock Market Crash and Great Depression.

By 1934, Walgreens was operating in 30 states with over 601 stores. After Charles Walgreen Sr. died, his son Charles R. Walgreen Jr. took over and ran the chain until his retirement.

Charles "Cork" R. Walgreen III took over after Jr's retirement in the early 1950s, and brought the company through many modern initiatives, including the switch to a computer inventory based system (bar code scanning). In 1986, it acquired the MediMart chain from Stop & Shop.

Last year they delivered revenues of $63.34 billion with a net income of $2.01 billion, which was a 7.3% increase in sales from the previous year. They have 166,000 employees.

MEDIA USAGE

Last 12 Months

On Cable, Walgreens trampled CVS with their 125,291 to CVS’ 23,036 for the last 12 months. CVS ran only 18.4% as many spots as Walgreens.

On the Radio, Walgreens once again out performed CVS. Walgreens ran 321,801 commercials to CVS schedule of only 27,152 ads. That was only 8.4% as many spots.

On TV, they get a bit closer with Walgreens running 71,223 spots to CVS with 39,232 spots.
