(White Plains, NY) September 27, 2010 - According to Arbitron, Jacksonville, FL is the 46th largest radio market with a population of 1,144,400. In the last two years the market has increased by more than 60,000 residents.

CITY FACTS

  • The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford, because of its location at a narrow point in the river across where cattle were once driven. The city was renamed in 1822 for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and eventual seventh President of the United States.
  • During the American Civil War, Jacksonville was a key supply point for hogs and cattle leaving Florida and aiding the Confederate cause. The city was blockaded by the Union, changing hands several times. Though no battles were fought in Jacksonville, the city was left in a considerable state of disarray after the war.
  • Jacksonville is home to Jacksonville University, the University of North Florida, Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Edward Waters College, Art Institute of Jacksonville, Florida Coastal School of Law, Trinity Baptist College, Jones College, Florida Technical College, Logos Christian College, and Brewer Christian College.
  • The first professional sports team came to the city in 1995 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They won the AFC Championship games in 1998 and 1999, but failed to advance to the Superbowl.
  • Famous people from Jacksonville: Pat Boone, 1950s singer and teen idol, Gary U.S. Bonds, R&B singer and songwriter, Scott McKenzie, pop singer, Johnny Tillotson, singer, Derek Trucks, blues rock guitarist, David Duval, professional golfer and winner of the 2001 Open Championship and the rock/core band Limp Bizkit.

State Farm, headquartered in Bloomington, IL, insures more cars and homes than any other insurer in the U.S. and is the leading insurer of watercraft. State Farm is also the leading insurer in Canada.

State Farm was created in 1922 by retired farmer and insurance salesman George Jacob "G.J." Mecherle. The motivation for starting State Farm was simple. It was about fairness and doing the right thing for the customer.

Mecherle knew farmers drove less and had fewer accidents than city folks. He thought they should pay less for automobile insurance. The insurance company G.J. worked for didn’t agree and suggested he start his own company. So he did.

A little more than 40 years later (1964), State Farm officially became the largest insurance writer in the world.

State Farm's 17,000 agents and 68,000 employees serve 80 million policies and accounts - more than 78 million auto, fire, life and health policies in the United States and Canada, and more than 1.9 million bank accounts. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is the parent of the State Farm family of companies.

In 1971, a relatively unknown composer wrote the music for their theme song “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” - His name is Barry Manilow.

Statefarm.com, their web site, went live in 1995. Today, customers use statefarm.com to get rate quotes, check claims, find an agent, plan for retirement and pay bills.

In 2000, State Farm launched State Farm Bank.

State Farm used Cable more than Radio and TV in the last six months. In fact, 47.5% of their spots were on Cable. They ran a total of 453,114 spots with the largest months being this July at 64,119 and last month, August with 72,423 spots.

On the Radio, State Farm was there with 401,940 spots in the last 12 months. January 2010 was the biggest month when they ran 73,447 spots and then hit a spike in March with 67,692 spots.

On TV, State Farm ran one-quarter as many spots on TV that they did on Radio and Cable. In the last 12 months, they ran 99,681 spots with this summer, July (13,652) and August (13,215) being their bigger months.

Telemundo vs. Univision

Telemundo, a television network that broadcasts in Spanish, is the second-largest Spanish-language content producer in the world behind Univision.

Telemundo reaches 93 percent of Hispanic and Latino American households in 142 markets via over-the-air, cable, and satellite television.

Telemundo was founded by Ángel Ramos with a television station in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1954. Telemundo Communications Group, the network's parent company, is now part of NBC Universal, which paid $2.7 billion for Telemundo in 2002.

Telemundo has 1,800 employees, and is headquartered in Hialeah, a Miami, Florida suburb.

Its two most broadcasted series were Más Sabe el Diablo (sold to 70 countries) and El Rostro de Analia (sold to 40 countries).

Univision is also a Spanish-language television network with the largest audience of Spanish language television viewers according to A.C. Nielsen ratings.

In 1955, Raul Cortez founded KCOR-TV, Channel 41, in San Antonio, Texas. The call letters were later changed to KUAL-TV. The station was not profitable, and in 1961 Cortez sold it to a group headed by his son-in-law Emilio Nicolas, Sr. and Mexican entertainment guru Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta.

The new owners turned the station around, and in 1962 signed on KMEX-TV, channel 34 in Los Angeles and in 1968 signed on WXTV channel 41 in Paterson, New Jersey, serving the New York metropolitan area. This was the beginning of the Spanish International Network, the first non-English-language television network in the United States.

Over the next 20 years, SIN would acquire other high-rated Spanish language television stations throughout the Western United States, and then expand the market to WLTV in Florida, KDTV in San Francisco, and WSNS-TV in Chicago.

In the mid-1970s the network also began to distribute their national signal via satellite, first as a 'super-station'-type feed of KWEX-TV San Antonio, then as a general feed allowing cable television operators to carry the network at little cost to their systems.

Univision was acquired on March 29, 2007 by a consortium led by Haim Saban's Saban Capital Group, along with TPG Capital, L.P., Providence Equity Partners, Madison Dearborn Partners, and Thomas H. Lee Partners for $13.7 billion.

Univision recently was one of the networks that carried The World Cup matches, which according to industry experts increased the Univision audience by 49% from the World Cup broadcasts in 2006.
