Media Monitors - New York

(White Plains, NY) August 30, 2010 – According to Arbitron, Buffalo-Niagara Falls is the 53rd largest radio market with a population of 968,000. It was the 52nd market two years ago.

CITY FACTS

  • Buffalo, in western New York, received its name from the creek that flows through it, and likely dates from the mid-18th century, when the area was first settled by Europeans.
  • The city got the nickname "City of Light" due to the fact it was the first complete city to be lit up with electrical lighting. But, on the dim side, President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on Sept. 6, 1901.
  • Buffalo is most famous for the way one prepares hot-spicy chicken wings, thus the name Buffalo Wings. The legend goes something like this: Teressa and Frank Bellisimo owned the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. She invented Buffalo chicken wings in 1964 when her son Dominic and his friends came to the bar looking for a quick late night snack.
  • Professional sports in Buffalo include a Minor League Baseball team called the Buffalo Bisons, an NFL team known as the Buffalo Bills, a tough hockey team known as the Buffalo Sabres, and a Soccer franchise with the name, Queen City FC.
  • Famous people have spent time in Buffalo, like Mark Twain who was the editor of the Buffalo Express, or F. Scott Fitzgerald, but the list of natives is also impressive. Actors Wendie Malick and Jesse L. Martin were born in Buffalo, as well as TV writers Tom Fontana and David Milch. The Goo Goo Dolls are from Buffalo, as well as Spyra Gyra. Baseball greats Warren Spahn and Orel Hershiser along with singers Rick James, Brian McKnight and Grover Washington, Jr. call Buffalo home.

Boniva was developed by Roche Laboratories, the Swiss pharmaceutical company, comes in two forms, a pill or injectable. It is a type of bisphosphonate and can be taken daily or monthly. Boniva was approved for the treatment of osteoporosis and Paget’s disease in 2003.

Bisphosphonates such as Boniva became more popular in the treating of osteoporosis after the long-term use of hormone replacement drugs was discouraged by researchers. STARBUCKS vs. DUNKIN’ DONUTS

Starbucks Corporation is an international coffee and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks has 17,133 stores in 49 countries, including 11,068 in the United States, nearly 1,000 in Canada and more than 800 in Japan. Starbucks sells drip brewed coffee, espresso-based hot drinks, other hot and cold drinks, snacks, and items such as mugs and coffee beans.

Starbucks started in Seattle, Washington, in 1971 by three partners: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegel, and writer Gordon Bowker. The three were inspired by Alfred Peet, from the Netherlands, who had a coffee company in Europe.

The first Starbucks location outside North America opened in Tokyo, Japan, in 1996. Starbucks entered the U.K. market in 1998 with the acquisition of the then 60-outlet, UK-based Seattle Coffee Company, re-branding all the stores as Starbucks. By November 2005, London had more outlets than Manhattan, a sign of Starbucks becoming an international brand.

In April 2003, Starbucks completed the purchase of Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia from AFC Enterprises, bringing the total number of Starbucks-operated locations worldwide in 2003 to more than 6,400. In September 2006, rival Diedrich Coffee announced that it would sell most of its company-owned retail stores to Starbucks.

In a corporate publicity stunt/marketing strategy, Starbucks closed 7,100 stores nationwide for three hours, February 2008, to retrain about 135,000 in-store employees and local management. This got Starbucks lots of publicity, but could not stem the tough economic environment of those personal cut-backs of consumers.

Last year, Starbucks delivered revenue of $9.77 billion with a net income of $390.80 million. They have 142,000 employees.

Dunkin' Donuts is an international donut and coffee retailer founded in 1951 in Quincy, Massachusetts by William Rosenberg. It is now headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts.

Dunkin' Donuts has 8,800 stores in 31 countries, including 6,400 Dunkin' Donuts throughout the USA. Dunkin' Donuts sells 52 varieties of donuts and more than a dozen coffee beverages as well as an array of bagels, breakfast sandwiches and other baked goods.

Dunkin' Donuts, along with Baskin-Robbins, is owned by Dunkin' Brands Inc. Dunkin' Brands used to own the Togo's chain, but sold this in late 2007 to a private equity firm. Dunkin' Brands was owned by a French beverage company, Pernod Ricard S.A. after it purchased Allied Domecq. In December 2005, the group was sold to three private equity firms, Bain Capital Partners, the Carlyle Group and Thomas H. Lee Partners, some of the same firms that were involved in taking Clear Channel Communications private.

Dunkin' Donuts' slogan was America Runs On Dunkin.' In March 2009, the company unveiled an alternate slogan, "You 'Kin Do It!", and launched a $100 million ad campaign to promote it. The campaign is slated to run through 2009 and includes radio, print and outdoor advertising, in addition to in-store point-of-purchase, special events, and sports marketing.

Latest figures, from 2008, show a $5.5 billion revenue figure for Dunkin’ Donuts.
