CITY FACTS

  • Norfolk (locally pronounced "NAW-fuhk"; also pronounced "NOR-fuhk" or "NOR-fik") is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA.

A cannonball from the bombardment (fired by the Liverpool) remains within the wall of Saint Paul's.

Burger King, the number two fast food chain in the world was first established in 1954 in Miami Florida by James McLamore and David Edgerton. The WHOPPER® sandwich was introduced in 1957 and quickly became one of the best-known sandwiches in the world. According to BurgerKing.com, over 11 million guests visit BURGER KING® restaurants worldwide each day.

Burger King has gone through many image and menu changes since 1957. One of Donald N. Smith's, a former McDonald’s executive hired to revamp Burger King, first changes to the menu was the addition of the Burger King Specialty sandwich line in 1979, which significantly expanded the breadth of the BK menu with many non-hamburger sandwiches including new chicken and fish offerings. A breakfast menu was also added along with the crossian’wich in 1983.

In 1999, BK revised its logo. The new Burger King logo is a stylized version of the original "bun halves" logo. Today’s Burger King slogan is “HAVE IT YOUR WAY,” but some of their past slogans have consisted of: "THE FIRE'S READY" (2003 – 2004), "AT BK, YOU GOT IT!"( 2002 - 2003), “The Whopper Says” (2001-2002), “Got The Urge?” (2000), “When You Have It Your Way It Just Tastes Better” (1999), “It Just Tastes Better” (1996) and “Get Your Burger’s Worth” (1994) and their attempt at repositioning McDonald’s “Eat like a king. Not a clown” that they used in the late 1970s.

According to public records, Burger King Holdings had revenues of $2.54 billion with net income of $200.10 million. Their sales increased by 3.4% in 2009. They have 41,320 employees.

On Cable, Burger King ran 261,623 spots in the last 12 months. Their biggest month was last April with 27,576 ads.

Fast food always does well on the radio with the biggest months being May, September and August. They ran 41,858 spots in May, 40,695 spots in September and 39,984 spots in August. In the last 12 months, they ran 427,217 spots on the radio.

TV seems to the least media used by Burger King. They ran 162,541 spots in the last 12 months, with the biggest month being August, when they ran 18,987 spots.

T-Mobile vs. Sprint

T-Mobile has a multi-merger history. In 1994, from the merger of General Cellular and Pacific Northwest Cellular, Western Wireless grows into a PCS provider for several western and southwestern states as well as Hawaii. After a successful public offering by Western Wireless, VoiceStream Wireless is launched. VoiceStream Wireless grows its capabilities and personality-building coverage, advanced customer care centers, and, with the signing of actress Jamie Lee Curtis, a nationwide message: Get More.

After spinning off from its parent company, VoiceStream Wireless grows to more than 7 million customers, launching innovations like wireless Internet service, and ultimately merging with Deutsche Telekom AG.

In 2002, VoiceStream Wireless officially becomes T-Mobile USA, launching service in California and Nevada. T-Mobile signs actress and wife of Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the global spokeswoman.

T-Mobile USA is the first to deliver the BlackBerry® wireless handheld e-mail solution with integrated phone. In 2003, T-Mobile USA is the first wireless carrier to introduce video messaging services in the United States-and customers start sending and recording full-motion, full-color, full-sound messages from their wireless phone.

In 2005, T-Mobile surpasses the 20-million-customer mark, having doubled its customer base in the last ten years. Then a year later, they introduce the myFaves experience. While the brand maintains its signature magenta hue, T-Mobile has a new tagline, “stick together,” created to underscore the importance of maintaining and enhancing personal relationships

In 2007, T-Mobile® joins Google to form Open Handset Alliance. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of the Android platform, which will provide developers a new level of openness that enables them to work more collaboratively

Even with all these achievements and strong international dominance, in the US, T-Mobile is #4 with 34 million subscribers, to Sprint at #3 with 48 million, AT&T with 87 million and the largest Verizon with 92 million subscribers.

T-Mobile is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, which stands to have revenues of revenues of $92.69 billion and net income of more than $500 million dollars. They have 259,920 employees.

SPRINT was born out of mergers with United Telecommunications, US Sprint and Centel. Each embraced the same bold approach that Sprint's founder Cleyson Brown showed in 1899, when the Brown Telephone Company successfully went toe-to-toe with the Bell monopoly in Abilene, Kansas. By the mid-1970s, the company's aggressive growth strategies had firmly established it as the nation's largest independent local telephone provider, which is still true today.

When long distance opened to competition in the 1980s, Sprint seized the opportunity. By 1986, Sprint led all U.S. telecom companies by completing the first nationwide, 100% digital, fiber-optic network. At the same time, the company was a pioneer in data communications, establishing the world's third largest commercial packet data network in 1980.

Sprint charged into the 1990s with pacesetting moves for both consumers and businesses in 1993, when Sprint and Centel merged to become a unique provider of local, wireless and long distance services. Sprint took its wireless strategy a big step further in the late '90s by building the only nationwide PCS network in the U.S.

In 2004, print merged with NEXTEL which always had gold and black as their colors, and SPRINT adopted their colors and added the bird-like feather emblem. The merger has made the Nextel name vanish except on franchises that sell cell phones under the Nextel brand. Those offices are known as Nextel Partners.

Public records show that Sprint is to have revenues of $32.26 billion with net income of $-2.44 billion. They have 40,000 employees.

Let's see how they used media the last 12 months:

T-Mobile ran 66,652 spots on the radio in the last 12 months, while Sprint ran 112,374 ads. May was the biggest month for Sprint, while T-Mobile excelled in December.
