Macy's, originally named R.H. Macy & Co. was founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy, a Quaker businessman. He opened the first New York City store on 6th Avenue at 14th Street. On the company's first day of business, which was October 28, 1858, the sales totaled $11.06 (Approximately $287.37 in today's economy).

In the 1850s, inspired by the red star tattooed on his arm, Macy replaced his store's original trademark rooster with one of the more recognizable retail marks of all time: the Macy's red star.

In 1862, Macy's was the first department store to introduce the in-store Santa that promoted a new holiday standard for department stores worldwide. Macy's was also the first department store to showcase elaborate holiday window displays in 1864.

Macy's employed the very first female retail executive in 1866, Margaret Getchell. In 1902 Macy's moved uptown to 34th street and Herald Square into a nine-story building with 33 elevators and 4 escalators, the first American store to use them. Once finished with their 7th avenue addition in 1924, Macy's declared itself the world's largest store.

Macy's launched their Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, which was originally called the "Macy's Christmas Parade" and featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo. The classic holiday 1947 movie, "Miracle on 34th Street" was based on Macy's and the parade.

Macy's sponsored the first "Macy's Fireworks Spectacular" in 1976, which is now the largest fireworks display in America and a 4th of July tradition in the city of New York.

In 1994 Macy's joined the Federated Department Stores Inc. to create the largest department store retailer in America. In 2007 the Federated Department Stores, Inc. became Macy's Inc., which built on the nationwide strength of the Macy's brand.

According to the latest stats, MACY'S created revenue of $24.89 billion, but is expecting a net income of $-4.80 billion. They have 163,000 employees.

On Cable, Macy's has a little hill leading up to June weddings and another blitz for Christmas starting in September. They ran a total of 212,890 spots on Cable with December having the most in any month at 32,338 spots.

On the radio, Macy's ran 494,243 spots in the last 12 months, with a big spike (100,084) in December.

Macy's ran more cable than TV, but the monthly ratios are about the same. Macy's ran 29,126 spots in December on TV and their total in the last 12 months was 160,302.

PROGRESSIVE vs. ALLSTATE

Progressive (NYSE: PGR) is one of the largest auto insurance groups in the United States thanks to innovations, including comparison rates and 24/7 customer and claims service. Originally called Progressive Mutual Insurance Company, Progressive was founded by Joseph Lewis and Jack Green in 1937 in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

By 1951, Progressive's growth prompted a move to new offices in downtown Cleveland. After the death of Joe Lewis in 1955, Jack Green became CEO and Peter Lewis, Joe's son, began his career with Progressive. In 1956, Progressive Casualty Company was formed to write auto insurance for high-risk drivers. Today, the company insures all types of drivers.

Progressive become a public company in 1971 and three years later, did the opposite of what most big companies do when they moved its headquarters back to the Cleveland suburb of Mayfield Village. In 1987, Progressive surpassed $1 billion in premiums. That same year, the New York Stock Exchange listed Progressive stock under the PGR symbol.

In 1995, when the Internet was just gaining popularity, Progressive stepped ahead of the competition and became the first major auto insurer in the world to launch a web site.

In the early 2000s, Progressive changed its claims focus to provide a better overall experience for every party involved in a claim, including the customer and the body shop.

Progressive also offers insurance for homes, motorcycles, boats, RVs, business vehicles and snowmobiles. In 2008, the company was ranked 175 in the Fortune 500.

Public documents show a net income of $1.06 billion and they have 24,661 employees.

The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL) is the largest publicly held personal lines insurer in the United States. Allstate was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck and Co., and was spun off in 1993. Their current advertising campaign, in use since 2004, asks, "Are you in good hands?" Its spokesperson is Dennis Haysbert.

Allstate sponsors many sporting events, including the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR race, and the United States Olympic Committee. The Allstate name is associated with reliability and financial strength. Their famous slogan, "You're In Good Hands with Allstate®", is one of the most widely recognized in business history.

Through Allstate Financial Services they target the retiree market as well as the vast and often financially underserved segment of middle income consumers, many millions who view Allstate as a trusted name and partner in insurance and financial services. But the company isn't without its blemishes.

Even though the Allstate Corporation owns and operates 15 companies around the United States, they have been the subject of a television exposé on how they handled their customers in Florida after the hurricanes and other claims by policy holders. It is a matter of record that they no longer offer homeowner's insurance in California.

According to company records, Allstate will create a net income of $854 million this year and has 36,000 employees.
