SPOT TRENDS
Last Twelve Months

Chrysler Group LLC is a U.S. automobile manufacturer headquartered in the Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills, Michigan. Chrysler was first organized as the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. From 1998 to 2007, Chrysler and its subsidiaries were part of the German based DaimlerChrysler AG (now Daimler AG).

The company was founded by Walter P. Chrysler on June 6, 1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company (est. 1904) was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation. Currently the company markets its Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge products under one dealership arrangement. They were one of two major automakers to take TARP bail-out money to stay afloat. We just learned that Chrysler bought a 60-second commercial in the February 7th 2010 Superbowl, which may have an audience of more than 100 million people.

Here is how they advertised in the last 12 months:

March was a big month for them in 2009, with 15,605, but they rally again in June with 23,622 ads on cable in the last 12 months. We have just recently seen Chrysler pushing even harder in the last two months of 2009, continuing into 2010. They ran 42,296 spots in November and then, 31,520 in December. Looks like they making a real effort to get back into the game.

In Radio, 2009 was not such a great year for them in radio. They only ran 403,588 spots in 2009 (compared to the #1 radio advertiser, GEICO running 1,935,333 spots).

Chrysler - Jeep - Dodge ads on TV in 2009, were slow to begin the year, in light of the financial situation and government involvement, but from September on, they appear to be more competitive with their marketing dollars. September they ran 23,750 spots on TV, then jumped to 32,319, hit 43,600 in November, and like the other media, dropped slightly to 40,700 in December.

STATE FARM vs. GEICO

State Farm, headquartered in Bloomington, IL, insures more cars and homes than any other insurer in the U.S. and is the leading insurer of watercraft. State Farm is also the leading insurer in Canada.

State Farm's 17,000 agents and 68,000 employees serve 80 million policies and accounts - more than 78 million auto, fire, life and health policies in the United States and Canada, and more than 1.9 million bank accounts. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is the parent of the State Farm family of companies. State Farm is ranked No. 32 on the Fortune 500 list of largest companies.

State Farm history begins in 1922 when founded by retired farmer and insurance salesman George Jacob "G.J." Mecherle. His motivation for starting State Farm was simple. It was about fairness and doing the right thing for the customer.

Mecherle knew farmers drove less and had fewer accidents than city folks. He thought they should pay less for automobile insurance. The insurance company G.J. worked for didn't agree and suggested he start his own company. That's exactly what he did.

GEICO originally called, Government Employees Insurance Company, and now known by the acronym GEICO, is an American auto insurance company. GEICO became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway in 1996 and as of 2007, provided coverage for more than 10 million motor cars, trucks and other motor vehicles owned by more than 8 million policy holders.

GEICO, employs around 23,000 people and has their headquarters is in Chevy Chase, Maryland. GEICO writes private passenger automobile insurance in the District of Columbia and in all U.S. states except Massachusetts, where regulations have stifled discount insurance companies. The company is notable for its television advertising, with several prominent campaigns running simultaneously in national markets. Their at times, off-beat spots have featured angry cavemen or a loveable Gecko.

GEICO was founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin and his wife Lillian Goodwin to provide auto insurance directly to federal government employees and their families. GEICO's original business model was predicated on the assumption that federal employees as a group would constitute a less risky and more financially stable pool of insures, as opposed to the general public. Despite the presence of the word "government" in its name, GEICO has always been a private corporation and not a government agency.

Let's see how these two insurance giants used media in the last 12 months:

MEDIA USAGE

Last 12 Months

GEICO is a major advertiser in the United States. On Cable last year, they ran 844,251 spots against State Farm's 281,737 ads.

GEICO is the big boss in radio with 2,473,120 spots against State Farm's 328,106.

On TV, we see GEICO all the time on the TV, but their totals seem a bit surprising. They only ran 286,621 spots for the last 12 months. State Farm ran only 66,197 spots.
